News and Gigs : Tinderbox Acoustic / Folk Band

  • Review: Friday 11h August - The King Charles, Poole Quay
  • 12 August 2006
  • The upper section of this wonderful and ancient pub could be described as the perfect music venue. A sprawling stage area under a high wooden-beamed ceiling make for acoustics that most performers dream of.

Tinderbox made full use of these features when they began their set at 9pm with an intricate yet laid back take on Gordon Lightfoot's 'In the early morning rain'. The sound check ensured that those already in the building stayed for the show, with some even reaching for mobile phones, inviting friends to join them.

All present seemed to love the style and diversity of the duo's set which featured - as well as a number of Tinderbox originals - such classics as 'Zombie' by the Cranberries, 'Fire and Rain' by James Taylor', 'Proud Mary' by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and 'Hotel California' by the Eagles.

By the time the set reached it's climax with the Jose Gonzalez arrangement of 'Heartbeats' the crowd had swelled and it was obvious the night would not end there. The duo went on to play three encores - Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Boxer', Tinderbox favourite 'Ordinary Day' and lastly their quirky arrangement of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene'. The evening finally drew to a close at 11.30pm, half an hour over schedule.

A great time was had by all in a venue that seems to put music before conversation. Tinderbox will be returning to The King Charles so please keep an eye on this site for details.
